Company is switching over to Cloud Hosting (Security?)
#1
Hello,

We're looking for the first time at switching from a dedicated in-house server to Cloud base.
What are the security threats or security problems with the Cloud vs dedicated servers?
Our question is is how much security problems are cloud servers?
What should we be looking for when we switch to Cloud servers?
what questions should we ask?

To start, does your company require the performance and scalability of cloud hosting. If not, a private dedicated server behind a firewall makes good sense if you are concerned about security.

The normal assumptions are that a public cloud (Amazon) is less secure because you share resources and private clouds are more secure because they are for a single user behind firewall/DMZ.

As for a list of questions, etc., call an expert or do a Google search to better educate yourself.

The very first question to be asked is "why are you moving to the cloud environment" followed by "do we understand the cloud environment we are likely to choose or do we need consultation." A lot of companies jump to the cloud only to find out they shouldn't have and vice versa. Cloud movements are a 'you need to be as situationally prepared' as possible.

Can it save you money? Oh yes, if you reached a certain entropy. Or have a specific workload, etc. It starts by figuring out your true need before we can really answer your question about security and even that needs more refinement. How secure? What's being secured? Etc.
